The western suburbs occupy the peninsula between the Swan River and the Indian Ocean, immediately west of the CBD, taking in Nedlands, Dalkeith, Claremont, Peppermint Grove, Mosman Park and North Fremantle. It is the smallest of Perth’s regions by both suburb count and land area, administered across several very compact local governments — the Town of Cambridge, City of Nedlands, Town of Claremont, Town of Cottesloe and the Shire of Peppermint Grove, the smallest local government area in Australia.
This is the most consistently high-value residential land in Western Australia, and it shows in what the doors are worth protecting. River-front Dalkeith and Peppermint Grove and the coastal strip through City Beach and Swanbourne carry substantial family homes on large lots that turn over infrequently — properties with more entry points than a standard block, often a main house, a pool gate, a garage and outbuildings, where keying alike matters simply because nobody wants to carry six keys. Homes held for decades commonly still run the hardware they were built with, and original quality is no substitute for a bolt that still throws fully.
Two things make the work here specific. The first is salt air: the coastal strip from North Fremantle up through Cottesloe, Swanbourne and City Beach corrodes standard brass and plated hardware within a few years, and on substantial homes the cost difference to marine-grade or stainless fittings is trivial against replacing them twice. The second is character stock. Claremont, Nedlands, Shenton Park and Floreat mix established period housing with steady infill and apartment development around the Fremantle rail line and Claremont Quarter, so one street can hold a Federation home with narrow door stiles and leadlight sidelights alongside a modern strata building with fire-rated entry doors and by-laws governing what can be changed. Neither takes off-the-shelf hardware without the door being assessed first.
