The southern suburbs are the largest and most varied area of Perth, taking in the affluent river-front suburbs of Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Ardross and Como, the port city of Fremantle and its surrounds, the Cockburn and Jandakot industrial and light-industrial belt, the Kwinana industrial strip, and the coastal growth corridor running south through Rockingham, Warnbro, Secret Harbour and Singleton. Kwinana Freeway and the Mandurah rail line carry most of the movement north and south, with Cockburn Central, Murdoch, Booragoon and Rockingham serving as the principal activity centres.
That variety means the job changes street to street. The Swan and Canning river suburbs — Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Bicton, Attadale, Rossmoyne, Shelley — hold established, tightly-held housing where original character doors sit alongside substantial modern rebuilds, and each takes quite different hardware. Fremantle, South Fremantle, White Gum Valley and Hilton carry heritage and character stock: narrow front door stiles, doors predating the standard 60mm backset, and sash and casement windows that are frequently the least secure opening in an otherwise well-locked home. Cutting the wrong hardware into original jarrah can’t be undone, so those doors get assessed before anything is recommended.
Through Willetton, Leeming, Bull Creek, Riverton and Canning Vale the pattern is settled family suburbia, much of it 1970s to 1990s, and most of it still running the hardware it was handed over with. Further south, Baldivis, Wellard, Bertram, Golden Bay and Secret Harbour are dominated by newer estate development where builder-grade hardware repeats street to street — the rear aluminium slider being the reliable weak point, and one a patio bolt fixes for far less than replacing the door. The coastal strip from Coogee down through Rockingham, Safety Bay, Warnbro and Singleton adds salt air to the equation, which corrodes standard plated hardware within a few years and makes marine-grade or stainless fittings worth the difference on any external door.
The industrial and defence footprint at Kwinana, Naval Base, Henderson and Garden Island, along with the Cockburn and Jandakot light-industrial belt, is different work again. Premises here need roller door locks, restricted key systems and access control rather than domestic deadbolts. Where staff turnover is a factor, losing track of who holds a key is a larger exposure than any single lock — restricted keys can’t be copied without authority, and you keep a record of who has what.
