Perth’s northern suburbs form the longest continuous run of urban development in the metropolitan area, stretching from the established inner-north pockets of North Perth, Yokine and Dianella all the way up the coastal plain to Yanchep and Two Rocks. The region is anchored by Joondalup as a major activity centre in its own right, with Stirling, Wanneroo, Karrinyup and Warwick acting as secondary hubs. The Mitchell Freeway and the northern rail line run in parallel the length of the corridor, and their progressive extension northwards has shaped where growth has landed — first Clarkson and Butler, then Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.
The result is a region where the lock work changes considerably as you move north. The older northern suburbs — Balga, Girrawheen, Nollamara, Westminster, Marangaroo — carry housing that has typically been added to over decades, leaving a mix of hardware ages and a separate key for every door. Windows are the commonest gap here, and usually the cheapest to fix. Progressive subdivision into duplex and triplex sites has added its own wrinkle: shared driveways, side gates and rear access that get far less attention than the front entry.
The beachside strip changes the priority entirely. From Scarborough and Trigg through Hillarys, Sorrento and Mullaloo, salt air shortens the life of standard plated hardware noticeably — brass and plated fittings corrode within a few years this close to the coast, and a lock that seizes is a lock that fails whether or not anyone tried it. Marine-grade or stainless fittings are worth the difference on any external door, and it’s the single most useful piece of advice we give coastal customers.
North of Burns Beach the picture changes again. The master-planned estates at Alkimos, Eglinton, Ridgewood and Yanchep are dominated by new house-and-land builds handed over with identical builder-grade hardware street to street, so a weakness in the standard specification is repeated across every home — usually the rear aluminium slider, which locks with a basic catch that can be lifted out of its track. A patio bolt fixes that for far less than replacing the door. The region’s rural fringe at Neerabup, Nowergup, Pinjar and Carabooda is different again, with market gardens and semi-rural holdings where sheds, workshops and gates hold more value than the front door and usually carry the weakest hardware on the property.
