The Perth Hills region covers the Darling Scarp and the jarrah forest country behind it, running the full north–south length of the metropolitan area’s eastern edge. Securing a hills property is a different job to securing a suburban home. Population is spread unevenly across the region: Byford in the south and High Wycombe and Forrestfield in the north have taken substantial new estate development, where hardware is modern and uniform, while Bailup, Beechina, Paulls Valley, The Lakes and Canning Mills remain sparsely settled bush and small-holding country where the shed matters more than the front door.
