Perth’s eastern suburbs run from the industrial and freight areas around Perth Airport, Kewdale, Hazelmere and Malaga north-east along the Swan River flats to Midland, Guildford and the Swan Valley. Midland is the region’s strategic centre, serving as the retail, health and transport hub for the eastern corridor and the gateway to the hills beyond. Guildford and Woodbridge carry some of the oldest surviving colonial-era streetscapes in Western Australia, while Ellenbrook, Aveley, Brabham, Dayton and Henley Brook have absorbed a very large share of the region’s recent population growth.
Two factors shape the lock work here. The first is the age spread. Guildford and Woodbridge homes routinely predate the standard 60mm backset entirely, so an off-the-shelf deadbolt either won’t fit or means cutting into original jarrah that can’t be replaced — and their sash and casement windows are often the least secure opening in an otherwise well-locked house. Set against that are the almost entirely new-build estates of Ellenbrook and its neighbours, handed over with identical builder-grade hardware street to street, where the rear aluminium slider is reliably the weak point. Between them sit the post-war and 1960s–70s homes through Lockridge, Kiara, Beechboro and Midvale, most still running original locks decades past their service life.
The second is that a lot of the region isn’t standard suburban stock at all. Across the Swan Valley — Caversham, Herne Hill, Baskerville, Millendon, Upper Swan, West Swan and The Vines — properties commonly carry sheds, workshops, cellar doors and gates on long driveways, so securing one means working through several buildings rather than one front door. Bullsbrook, at the far northern edge, remains largely rural and semi-rural. Around Kewdale, Hazelmere and Malaga the work is different again: roller door locks, restricted key systems and access control for premises where staff turnover matters more than hardware strength.
